Special needs: What if my baby weighs more than 20 pounds but is not one year old yet? Many babies reach 20 pounds well before their first birthday. However, just because your baby weighs more than 20 pounds does not make him ready to ride forward facing; the baby’s neck muscles are not strong enough. Look for a convertible seat that can be used rear-facing by children who weigh more than 20 pounds. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that all infants and toddlers should ride in a Rear-Facing Car Safety Seat until they are 2 years of age or until they reach the highest weight or height allowed by their car safety seat's manufacturer.
